pyroyaleA friend of mine from England was in Osaka this weekend so I went there for a day trip today (but I'm not going to talk about that because that's boring and of no interest to anyone other than me and my friend.)
Before meeting her, I stopped off at the Daimaru Department Store in Shinsaibashi to look at an exhibition of some necklaces.
Yes, those SWEET 10 DIAMOND necklaces!
Daimaru is an upmarket and expensive department store and I'm sure GACKT would be glad to know that his necklaces were on the first floor, right next to Gucci and Cartier.
There were two glass exhibition cases, one for ETERNITY and one for Re:PURE and the walls were decorated with big promo photos of him and a couple of video screens showing clips of PVs from over his ten year career.
One of the assistants came over to me immediately and told me to ask her if I had any queries and then left me alone to look at the necklaces.
OH MY GOD. They are all so much more beautiful and intricate than any of the photos have shown them to be. I'm still not overly keen on the yellow gold versions, but all of the white gold and silver versions are stunning. They look much more expensive than they actually are (although at 2,940,000yen for the most expensive they aren't exactly cheap).
While I was still staring at them all, another viewer started speaking to the assistant. She was EXACTLY the customer that these necklaces are aimed at - middle aged housewives who spend their salaryman husband's wages on their boy toy GACKT. Seriously, she fit that bill perfectly.
She was looking at the yellow gold Re:PURE necklace so the assistant took it out of the case and handed it to her to look at closely. As soon as the assistant was finished with her, I asked to see the silver version of Re:PURE. I'd have loved to have asked to see the mega-expensive ETERNITY that GACKT always wears but I thought that was probably pushing my luck!
The pendant on the necklace was so heavy. It's obviously solid silver and the sapphires sparkled so much and were the most wonderfully deep blue... It had all of these little details on it that made it so pretty and as I was turning it over in my hand and looking at it the assistant started telling me about how they were all hand made, how the stones were individually rounded, where the stones were sourced from and everything else she could think of about it.
I completely fell in love with it. It was so beautiful!
I didn't want her to think that I was completely wasting her time so I asked her to confirm that the store would still be there until Tuesday and thanked her for help. I was about to leave when she asked me if I wanted to try it on...
Er, YES!
She led me over to the side and I sat down in front of this mirror while next to me, another assistant was filling out some paperwork because someone was buying the silver ETERNITY necklace (380,000yen).
The necklaces have four different large links on them so you can adjust the chain length from 40cm to 55 cm and I asked her to use the 45cm link.
Ahhhh, it looked so stunning on me! The pendant was just the right size to be noticed without being too showy and it fit just beneath my collar bone perfectly. I think she saw the love in my eyes because she had this smug smile on her face that just said "yeah, told you it was beautiful". I turned it around a couple of times to look at both sides and then reluctantly asked her to remove it.
If I had the cash I'd have walked away with that. It was so beautiful.

Edit - I've removed the photos from the post because there's a new DEARS Staff Blog up today with a photo of the exhibit and a note saying no photography is allowed... Eek. I don't want to get in trouble or go against DEARS/wishes so they're gone. Sorry!
